The COVID-19 pandemic unearthed the fault lines for what could be a generational catastrophe in education. Even before the pandemic resulted in school closures affecting over 1.6 billion students in at least 161 countries, more than 250 million school-age children were out of school globally.

“If Africa is to maintain its lead, it is imperative that higher education becomes a more affordable option enabling the continent to create a strong, well-qualified workforce to meet the needs of its growing economy.” With plans to enrol 60,000 students by the year 2020, UNICAF has awarded more than $35m worth of scholarships and cut the cost of attending university for thousands of sub-Saharan transnational students by up to 80%, making higher education, something that has been out of reach for the vast majority of the population, a viable and very real option.

African tertiary education can’t meet demand

The demand of studying at a post-secondary level in many African countries is heavily outnumbering the available space. It was revealed that in Nigeria alone over one million qualified students could not secure a place at university last year and with 50% of Africans under the age of 19, demographics show that demand will continue to grow.

In the UK, the recent vote to leave the EU has seen an almost-instant drop in applications from EU students, leading to an opportunity that will not only help Africa, but will also maintain the status of UK universities on the international educational market.

One such company that is trying to step into this breech is UNICAF, an interesting company dedicated to educate Africa in HE qualifications. Founded in 2012, it partners with Western universities to offer locally accredited degrees to African students who want to study online while continuing to work.
