Agentic Digital Twin Researcher (QI-Digital)(m/f/d)
Salary group E 13 TVöDTemporary contract until 31.12.2027
Full-time / suitable as part-time employment
The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM, we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and chemistry and process engineering.
The eScience division is an interdisciplinary research unit focusing on digitalization, scientific data management, data science, and AI. As part of this, we contribute to QI-Digital – a national initiative to develop a secure and interoperable digital infrastructure for quality assurance.
QI-Digital connects digital twins, product passports, and verifiable credentials using standardized models such as the Asset Administration Shell (AAS). It integrates AI methods like federated learning and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to support automation and regulatory compliance. Current use cases include Additive Manufacturing and Hydrogen Refueling Stations, where digital twins capture quality-relevant data for improved traceability, safety, and sustainability across industrial processes.
We are looking for talented people to join us.
Your responsibilities:
- Design, development and maintenance of digital twin data models for the QI Digital project (e.g. additive manufacturing, hydrogen filling stations) and implementation of all twins in the Asset Administration Shell (AAS) as a consistent standard infrastructure
- Provision of AAS twins as a reliable data source for an agentic AI/RAG system that supports quality infrastructure analyses and decisions
- Development of digital certificates and digital product passports (AAS submodels) to ensure conformity, origin and sustainability
- Collaborate with partner projects to integrate twins, certificates and AI pipelines end-to-end and drive QI best practices
- Build, operate and optimise proof-of-concept environments using DevOps tools (Docker, CI/CD) for rapid iterations and reliable deployments
- Continuously evaluate and expand prototypes to ensure interoperability, data consistency and scalable performance
- Actively participate in research and scientific publications; present results at conferences and in journals
- Completed academic degree (Diploma, Master’s) in computer science, data engineering, software engineering or a related field
- In-depth experience in data modelling and semantic technologies (ontologies, knowledge graphs)
- Experience with the Asset Administration Shell (AAS) or similar digital twin frameworks is desirable
- Willingness and ability to quickly familiarise yourself with new industrial domains and use cases
- Experience with digital product passports or digital certificates is an advantage
- Familiarity with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) or agentic AI systems is desirable
- Solid DevOps expertise (Docker, CI/CD) and very good programming skills (Python or Java)
- Very good written and spoken English and good written and spoken German
- Analytical thinking, structured working style, initiative and strong team and communication skills
- Interdisciplinary research at the interface of politics, business and society
- Work in national and international networks with universities, research institutions and industrial companies
- Attractive and modern working environment with excellent infrastructure and state-of-the-art scientific equipment
- Good work-life balance, possibility of mobile working [up to 60%], flexible working hours, 30 days of vacation and up to 12 days of compensatory time off per year
