The Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz is seeking an
Artistic Director (m/f/d)
starting 1 August 2027.
We are looking for an experienced, courageous, empathetic individual or team with the vision to lead one of 21-century Berlin’s largest ensemble theaters. Our new Artistic Director should be someone who can enhance both the theater’s artistic excellence and its social relevance. Their task will be to lead the operations of Berlin’s largest repertory theater for plays and performance and its staff of around 230 employees (including the ensemble) with foresight and accountability while furthering its strategic development. A cooperative, open, respectful working relationship with the Director of the Volksbühne and all other managers and staff will be essential.
The appointment is for five years.
The Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, located on a central square in Berlin-Mitte, is a public theater run by the state of Berlin. It is one of the city’s leading ensemble theaters and has several performance/event venues: the main Volksbühne stage, the 3rd floor stage, the Roter Salon and Grüner Salon, and the Prater stage on Kastanienallee. The Volksbühne produces its own sets, costumes, and decorations in its own workshops.
The Volksbühne sees itself – both locally and internationally – as an avant-garde, uncompromisingly thought-provoking theater and cultural space for interdisciplinary discourse. Both international artists and dance/performance (alongside drama) are central elements of its artistic profile today. With roots in the “people’s theater” movement, the Volksbühne is committed to producing progressive, politically relevant theater for a broad and diverse audience and inspires a sense of identification in the city and many of its people. The Volksbühne also includes the P14 youth theater, which is dedicated to promoting young talent and has produced many members of the next generation of theater professionals.
The Artistic Director is responsible for the overall management of the theater in accordance with applicable legal, collective bargaining, and administrative regulations as well as the resolutions of the Berlin Senate and House of Representatives. They are assisted by the Administrative Director, who acts as the budget officer.
The State of Berlin actively promotes a culture that values diversity. We welcome expressions of interest from people of color and applicants of all nationalities, religions and beliefs, sexual orientations and gender identities, and age groups, as well as people with disabilities.
