Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT)
We are looking for the Institute for Astroparticle Physics (IAP) from 01.10.2025, limited for 3,5 years, for a
Physicist or Electrical engineer (f/m/d) 65 % part-time
To strengthen our KATRIN++ team, we are looking for motivated and dedicated early-career scientists (f/m/d) who are eager to join us in developing the next-generation experiment for the direct determination of the neutrino mass. Our work lies at the intersection of fundamental research and cutting-edge technology. We particularly welcome creative minds who enjoy hands-on work in the laboratory and are driven by curiosity and commitment to advance state-of-the-art experimental methods.
Job description- The focus of your research will be the characterization of Metallic Magnetic Calorimeters (MMCs) and other quantum sensors in external magnetic fields (up to 50 mT)
- You will independently design experimental setups for a 10 mK dilution refrigerator, perform measurements , and analyze the resulting data
- In addition, you will model detector performance (timing an energy resolution), compare simulations with experimental data, and extrapolate the sensitivity to the neutrino mass in the context of potential quantum sensor sensor array using a tritium source like at KATRIN
- Participation in teaching and outreach activities is expected
There is the possibility of pursuing a doctorate in addition to academic work.
Personal qualification- You have a master's degree in physics or electrical engineering
- Strong expertise in the field of quantum mechanics (mK) and quantum sensors is desirable
