The University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN), founded in 2021, is a living laboratory for the university of the future – adapted to the age of artificial intelligence and to constant technological, economic, and social change. The academic organization of UTN is based on Departments as central structural units. The Departments of Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence and of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences are already established. Three further Departments are in development: Biological Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, and Natural Sciences. Departments at UTN are characterized by flat hierarchies and offer exciting opportunities for challenging and rewarding career paths. The University of Technology Nuremberg is looking to fill, at the earliest possible date, a position as a
Professor (m/f/d) (Open Rank: W3 or W2 with Tenure-Track to W3) of Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence
at the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence.
Your tasks:
You will represent the field of Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence in research and teaching. You will play an important role in building up the CSAI department, including through your involvement in degree program planning. You will collaborate with outstanding international researchers in the field of computer science and artificial intelligence. In addition, you will participate in (interdisciplinary) third-party funding applications and supervise graduation theses and doctoral dissertations.
Your profile:
These positions are intended both for early career researchers who show great potential for scientific development and for established researchers with a proven track record of scientific excellence.
You have excellent academic qualifications for the respective career level in the field of software engineering, programming languages or system development in conjunction with artificial intelligence, with expertise in relevant subject areas, including but not limited to:
- AI in software engineering
- Automated program generation and optimization
- Verification, testing and security of software systems
- Explainability of AI and of software engineering
- Software for distributed, highly-parallel AI systems
- Intelligent development environments
For a W2 tenure-track position, you must demonstrate academic excellence, for example through relevant publications and first third-party funding experience. It is advantageous if you demonstrate your potential for interdisciplinary research (e.g., on AI research) in your application (e.g., in your research statement) and during the selection process. You have first experience in teaching and supervising graduation theses or doctoral dissertations. It is advantageous if your research has potential applications. As a candidate for a W3 position, you must be able to demonstrate substantial achievements that underscore your academic excellence as well as your pedagogical and personal suitability: You are internationally recognized as a representative of your field. Proven achievements in interdisciplinary research (e.g., on AI research) are advantageous. You have a significant track record in acquiring third-party funding. You can demonstrate your ability to manage research groups and have substantial teaching and supervisory experience (e.g., through completed doctoral supervisions). You can demonstrate the practical relevance of your research through successful technology transfer.
For either career level, we are looking for a person who demonstrates openness to the innovative departmental structures at UTN. Sensitivity and openness to diversity issues and gender equality in science are expected. An international academic background is considered an advantage. We are looking for team players who are willing to embrace something new and actively contribute to the build-up phase of UTN.
We expect you to contribute to all English-language courses in which the department is currently involved and will be involved in the future. We also expect you to contribute to the development of degree programs, to be committed to the implementation of innovative, digital teaching and learning concepts, and to be willing to cooperate within the department and beyond. Teaching experience in interdisciplinary contexts is considered an advantage.
The legal hiring criteria according to Article 57 Paragraph 1 and Article 60 Paragraph 3 BayHIG apply. Therefore, a university degree is a prerequisite, as well as a particular aptitude for research, usually demonstrated through a doctorate or equivalent scientific qualification. Furthermore, applicants must demonstrate additional scientific achievements beyond their doctorate or doctorate-equivalent qualification, as well as pedagogical aptitude.
