The job
The UFZ Department Biodiversity and People is part of the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig. The center is located in Leipzig and is operated as a consortium of the University of Leipzig together with the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research – UFZ. It also receives support from the Max Planck Society, the Leibniz Association and the Free State of Saxony.
Your tasks
- Quantitative analyses, empirical work and conceptual synthesis in the fields of biodiversity and biodiversity restoration, citizen science and links to human health
- Collaboration with the ongoing citizen science projects in the department, such as FLOW on freshwater monitoring and VielFalterGarten/​​Urban Nature Plans UNP+ on butterflies and urban ecology
- Application of statistical approaches to data integration and systematic evaluation of heterogeneous biodiversity and health data
- Active collaboration with natural history societies, museums, state agencies, citizen science projects and other stakeholders at local, national and international level
- Attraction of third-party project funding
- Supervision of BSc and MSc students
- Publication of results in international peer reviewed journals and presentation at conferences

- Completed MSc, and ideally PhD in biology, ecology or related fields with a clear focus on biodiversity with experience in quantitative analysis and/or spatial data management
- Experience in interdisciplinary research; a publication record in the fields of biodiversity or citizen science desirable
- Particular strengths in quantitative, statistical biodiversity analyses
- Experience in database management, scientific programming (R) and data visualization essential
- Experience in transdisciplinary collaboration with stakeholders from NGOs, natural history societies, museums and public agencies as well as in organizing workshops and conducting surveys
- Experience in third-party project acquisition, project management and successful implementation desirable
- Excellent team player, friendly and professional demeanor
- Fluency in spoken and written English and German
- Attracted by the opportunity to develop a scientific research program in our department
- Willingness to travel for fieldwork
