Tenure-Track Position as an Assistant Professor of German as a Foreign Language in the Context of Multilingualism
at the Department of German and Comparative Studies. The position is planned to be filled by the earliest possible starting date for an initial period of four years. Upon successful evaluation, the appointment will be extended for another three years. FAU offers the long-term perspective of a permanent appointment to an associate (W2) professorship if the requirements of the tenure evaluation are met.
We seek to appoint a top early career scholar with an internationally visible profile in research and teaching German as a foreign language with a focus on linguistics. The candidate should develop outstanding expertise in the field and have a track record in empirical research into language acquisition or empirical research into multilingualism. A further specialization in German as an academic language and German as the language of education is desired. The successful candidate will be required to teach in all bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degree programs concerning the German language as well as in all relevant teaching degree programs (elementary school and all types of secondary school: Mittelschule, Realschule, and Gymnasium). We also expect participation in the research training group 鈥淒ie konstruktionsgrammatische Galaxis鈥� (the construction grammar galaxy) and in research activities at the interdisciplinary linguistics centers, as well as in international collaboration and exchange programs.
Successful candidates should demonstrate initial academic achievements and the capacity for independent research at the highest international standards. They should have substantial research experience abroad and/or experience in managing research projects and in raising third-party funding. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree as well as a passion for education and relevant teaching experience are also prerequisites. Candidates who are able and willing to teach in both German and English are preferred.
No more than four years should have passed between the conferral of the doctoral degree and deadline of the call for applications; this period is extended to a maximum of seven years in the field of medicine or clinical psychology and may also be extended due to periods of supporting a family or caring for a family member. The date of the doctoral certificate is decisive.
The successful candidate should become actively involved in administering academic affairs and in developing strategic initiatives. FAU pursues a policy of intense student mentoring and therefore expects its teaching staff to be present during lecture periods.
