The Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF is seeking applications for an artistic professorship at grade half W3 in the field of ‘Film Scenography for Design-Oriented Building Construction and Technologies’ as from 1 October 2026.
W3 professorship “Film scenography for design-oriented building construction and Technologies”
Time LimitIn accordance with § 45 Brandenburgisches Hochschulgesetz (BbgHG – Brandenburg University and College Act) the professorship will be appointed for an unlimited period. For the purpose of testing the pedagogical skills of applicants from professional or artistic practice, the initial appointment is made for a limited period of three years. This time-limited appointment will be converted into an unlimited position following a positive evaluation.
Responsibilities
The professorship ‘Film Scenography for Design-Oriented Building Construction and Technologies’ is assigned to the Scenography department. The tasks of the professorship include
- Supervision and coordination of scenographic teaching in the context of interdisciplinary film projects, in consultation with other disciplines
- The skills and knowledge to be taught relate to design work, design planning, costing, team management, workflow, professional, artistic and personnel management style and implementation during on-location filming and studio construction, taking into account future-oriented tools, methods and requirements. Teaching the creation of set design, planning and construction is important.
- Competent scenographic advice and support for final films
- Initiation of artistic research projects
- Teaching opportunities, open-mindedness and experience in relation to current trends, such as the use of AI and its influence on the future field of activity of set design
- Providing experience in the use of VFX and willingness to carry out co-creative teaching together with the VFX Bachelor's degree program
- Technology procurement for the scenography program
Recruitment requirements
The legal requirements for hiring are derived from § 43, paragraph 1, numbers 1 to 4a and paragraph 4 BbgHG as follows:
- completed university studies in the fields of scenography, architecture, stage design or a comparable degree
- pedagogical and didactic aptitude, to be proven by appropriate teaching activities at a university / film
- school / academy
- special aptitude for artistic work, to be demonstrated in particular through successful and excellent
- scenographic and artistic project work
- Furthermore, additional artistic achievements must be demonstrated through experience with
- outstanding international artistic film projects as a production designer or art director (the applicant's
- own role and expertise must be clearly indicated in the application documents).
- good written and spoken English skills and a willingness to teach courses using the English language
- Expertise in the acquisition of third-party funding
- Ability to work in a team and experience with topics such as new work and co-creation
- Existing networks in the film industry, e.g. for visiting artists, teaching units and students' film practice
- Openness to and experience with artistic research and/or media art projects
Teaching comprises 9 LVS (weekly contact hours per semester) according to the teaching obligation regulation of the state of Brandenburg. The language of instruction at the university is German; individual courses are offered in English.
