The activity took place on 23 February 2026 in Nyalenda Slums in Kisumu City and was organised in partnership with Winnie-ng Hub, a community-based organisation dedicated to supporting children from underprivileged backgrounds through mentorship, education support and psychosocial care.

This Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity forms part of Unicaf’s ongoing commitment to community empowerment and inclusive support systems that enhance access to education and opportunity. Recognising that a child’s academic success is deeply connected to the stability of their home environment, the initiative aimed to address some of the immediate household challenges faced by families in the community.

Through engagement with Winnie-ng Hub and parents, it was identified that many children supported by the organisation come from households experiencing significant socio-economic hardship. One of the primary concerns raised was food insecurity. Parents shared that the lack of food and basic necessities at home directly affects their children’s concentration, school attendance and overall academic performance. Children who attend school hungry often struggle to focus, participate actively, or remain consistent in their studies.

Parents further emphasised that when there is food and basic household stability, children feel more secure, motivated and emotionally settled—conditions that are essential for effective learning. By providing essential household items, Unicaf aimed to ease the financial burden on parents and guardians, contributing to a more conducive home environment for children’s educational development.

The CSR activity had a meaningful and immediate impact on beneficiary families. Parents expressed relief and gratitude, noting that access to basic necessities helps restore dignity and fosters a sense of stability within the household. The initiative also reinforced the critical link between food security, emotional wellbeing and academic achievement.

Beyond the distribution itself, the partnership strengthened collaboration between Unicaf and Winnie-ng Hub, building community trust and laying the foundation for sustained social impact initiatives in the region.

By investing in families and recognising the interconnectedness of home stability and educational success, Unicaf continues to demonstrate that meaningful educational transformation begins not only in classrooms, but also within supported and empowered homes.
